Clicks of Wrath
Have you ever noticed that videos and articles on the internet seem to be disproportionately negative? Videos and reviews showing that pretty much any movie, show, book or game are terrible? Showing that situations within the pop culture sphere are earth shattering, Taika Waititi is getting fired for fooling around with more than one person at a time. In the end this type of a headline tends to get more clicks, and more shares because it catched our attention and we are more than willing to accept that everything is terrible. I am here to tell you that things are not that bad, in many ways things are actually good and there is reason to be hopeful.
In regards to this, and how it connects with my experiences at the store are several messages I received over the past week regarding The Book of Exalted Deeds in the new Magic set, people believing this card was banned, when it has not been. Now I did look into it with the first message, as it was news to me, and when I found that it was banned in a Best of One format that is only available on Arena (Standard 2022) and that the ban there may only be for a month or so, as when the next set comes in this will be revisited, I understood why it had flown under my radar, I don't play that particular format. In the meantime Magic Pros have been quick to go online complaining about the ban, complaining that there should be wildcards given, complaining that the ban should not have happened. Odd, when it wasn't that long ago they railed against Best of One formats in general. Is it possible that the card sees banning in other formats? Maybe, though at this time Wizards does not believe that is the case. In regards specifically to wildcards on Arena, if a card is banned in Standard, the card will no longer be available in packs on Arena, and yes it will be replaced with wildcards to compensate, but when the card is still very much playable on the program, and the banning is likely to be fairly unimpactful, it doesn't make sense to offer wildcards for it, heck are they then to offer a wildcard every time you open a pack with the offending card?
Do these pros need the wildcards? No, they have collections that are completely full in most cases. Do these pros care if you have the wildcards? Not in the slightest, it doesn't effect them in the slightest. They care that you are angry, as angry people are engaged, and likely to respond, and share their content. You being angry literally is paying these content creators. Yes content creators, the job of Magic Pro has always been a lie, as it is not and has never been the Magic Professional Tour, it is the Magic Promotional Tour, and even with the insanely high win rates of in some cases as much as 65%, that is no where near a guarantee of actually making money from tournament placement, but tournaments, as well as online practice provide really good fodder for videos and articles, and those do pay the bills.
In the end, if there is a problem with things I'm going to call it out, sometimes problems exist and more voices is good. If there isn't a problem we can celebrate our shared passions together, all I ask is that when someone tells you how you should feel, ask yourself what their motive is before you get upset, and always feel free to reach out to people you trust for their take as well.
